Son of George Cheap, Collector of Customs at Prestonpans, Scotland
He was educated at Balliol College, Oxford (BA 1754 MA 1757)
In the late 1760s he was a social acquaintance of Benjamin Franklin
Became Vicar of Sutton on Forest in 1768
Became Prebendary of York in 1776.
He is descended from a Scottish noble family, several of his brothers served in the Army,
and one became a merchant in Virginia
A marble memorial to Andrew Cheap and his wife lies under the centre of the Communion Table in the church of Sutton on the Forest.
Before the church was restored it lay 3-4 feet to the north-east of its present place, but still within the Communion rails.
Its removal was owing to the putting down of a tile pavement. It might have been buried had it not been for the Vicar of the parish, Rev Henry Martyn Sanders, who chose to keep it in sight
