A CRUISE IN THE 'ENID'
On June 30th a party of 5 rowed own the River Derwent to see the ruins of Wressil castle: the voyage down the river took about 3 hours: and owing to the strength of the tide the return trip did not occupy much more time.
In the days of Richard II who reigned 1377-1399, Thomas Percy, Earl of Worcester built a great square castle at Wressil. Three sides of the square were pulled down 1650, by order of Parliament, who seemed to fear lest it be seized for King Charles I. The part which still remains is the South Front, flanked by 2 large square towers.
It is wonderful how little the stone work has been injured by "the fretting of the tooth of time"
