ARABELLA ANNE

widow of WILLIAM FAIRLIE CLARKE Esquire

of the Bengal Civil Service

(who died in Calcutta on September 23rd 1835)

and the third daughter of the later JOHN CHEAP esquire

of the same service.

She died at Low Harrogate February 11th 1853 aged 53 years

And also of

PATRICK CHEAP CLARKE

her eldest son, Ensign in the 41st Regiment

of Bengal Native Infantry who died at the Cape of Good Hope

February 24th 1840 aged 19 years

Also of

EMMA GEORGIANA CLARKE

who died at London May 7th 1873 aged 44 years

And of

ARABELLA AGNES CLARKE

who died at Elvington March 29th 1878 aged 56 years

Youngest and eldest daughters of the above

 

 

Within this church yard of this Church, in the faith of Christ and the sure hope of life eternal were laid to rest

the mortal bodies of JOHN ERSKINE CLARKE M.A. Oxon. b 1827-d1920

Chaplain in ordinary to their Majesties Queen Victoria, King Edward VII and

King George V

Vicar of St Michael Derby 1856-1866

of St Andrew Derby 1866-1872

And finally the first Vicar of St Luke, Nightingale Lane, SW

of ALURED JAMES CLARKE M.A. Oxon b1831-d1885

of Elvington Grange and for twenty years Rector of this parish, through whose inspiration and generosity the Old Church which

had fallen into decay was replaced by the present building and the Schools were erected and given to the Parish

of EMMA GEORGIANA CLARKE b1829-d1873,

of ARABELLA AGNES CLARKE b1822-d1878

and of MARGARET GRACE CLARKE b1824-d1899

sisters of the above

their eldest son b1871-d1926 who after succeeding his uncle as Vicar of St Luke Nightingale Lane 1914-1924

was Vicar of St John Redhill 1924-1926

Near to these there also lies the body of ARABELLA ANNE CHEAP b1799-d1853

widow of WILLIAM FAIRLIE CLARKE Esquire

of Bengal Civil Service who died at Calcutta in 1835

the father and grandfather of the above

She was the third daughter of JOHN CHEAP

and the niece of ANDREW CHEAP, Rector of Elvington 1801-1841

The two families of CHEAP and CLARKE between them owned and occupied Elvington Grange for

upwards of 150 years from 1764 until 1918
