The building of the Devon and Exeter Hospital was a great milestone in medical practice in the South West of England.
It was begun in 1740 under the initiative of the Dean Alured Clarke, and a local worthy named John Tuckfield. It was one of the first provincial hospitals in Britain. The picture shows its appearance in the late 18th century.
This isn't the only hospital Alured was connected with, the Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester was founded in 1736 by Alured in a pair of houses, rented at £14 per year, close to the Cathedral. It was the first hospital outside of London to be supported entirely by voluntary contributions and the first in the provinces to give active medical treatment to patients from the county in its 50 beds, which later increased to 60. Initially there was an apothecary, a matron, 3 nurses, 2 physicians and 2 surgeons.
